Located in Nashville, Tennessee, the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief effort began its operation in 1990. Since 1991 the non-profit organization has distributed more than $110 million in emergency food and supplies to tens of thousands of disaster relief victims in more than 45 states. The Portland congregation has contributed to this good work for a number of years not only by sending a donation every month, but also by sending men and women to their headquarters to help load trucks after a major disaster. The Portland area was a recipient of help from the disaster relief in 2002 when a tornado touchdown west of town in the Scattersville community. The disaster relief immediately responded to bring us supplies. The Portland congregation also provided relief effort by sending trucks and supplies to the Lafayette, Macon County area in 2008 when a tornado destroyed their community. The Churches of Christ Disaster relief effort will immediately respond to any major disaster in the continental United States by sending truckloads of emergency food, water, cleaning, and other supplies. The aid is usually distributed through a local congregation to anyone in need. The Disaster Relief is a very worthy effort that the Portland Church of Christ is very proud to support.
